Dysport (aka abobotulinumtoxinA) is an injectable neuromodulator that smooths lines and wrinkles for up to four months. It’s FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe frown lines, also called glabellar lines or “11s,” between the eyebrows.
It’s also used off-label to correct other expression lines, like crow’s-feet and forehead creases. Other common treatment areas include:
● armpits and palms, to reduce excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
● the platysmal bands, to smooth the neck
● the masseter muscles, to treat bruxism (teeth grinding) or narrow the width of the face
● bunny lines on the bridge of the nose
● the depressor muscles of the outer lip, to raise the corners of the lip
● the depressor muscle of the nose, to raise the tip of the nose
● the mentalis muscle, to smooth the dimples on the chin
● the upper lip, to correct a gummy smile
● elsewhere on the body, to treat medical conditions due to severe muscle spasticity,
including vaginismus(with a 75% success rate according to one study)
Injections are quick (10 to 20 minutes) and have practically no downtime, so they’re easy to fit into your workday.
For select people, Dysport may kick in faster than other injectable neurotoxins
Dysport may create a more natural look than other neuromodulators
It’s a temporary fix, so if you don’t like the results, you’re not stuck with them—they’ll gradually disappear within a few months.
One injection. Five points.
Dysport temporarily treats moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows by reducing specific muscle activity.
Wrinkles are caused by repeated movements and muscle contractions.7 One injection into each of the 5 points between and above the eyebrows temporarily prevents muscle contractions that cause frown lines.
In other words: natural-looking results that look and feel like you.
When considering any kind of treatment, it’s important to understand as much as possible about the procedure. Here’s a general step-by-step guide to help you before, during and after your Dysport procedure.
Consultation
Once youfind your physician, discuss with your doctor your expectations and whether you have any health conditions or allergies that could interfere with your treatment. It’s your appointment, so don’t hesitate toask your doctor questions.
Treatment
Effective treatment requires one injection into each of five points between and above the eyebrows. Although office visit times vary, the procedure generally takes 10 to 20 minutes. Your healthcare professional will determine the exact placement of each injection to get results that are right for you.
Post-treatment
Ask your doctor about any precautions you should take after treatment. Call your doctor or get medical help right away if you have any problems swallowing, speaking or breathing. If one or more of these happen, do not drive a car, operate machinery or do other dangerous activities.
There should be little to no down time after your treatment. More than half of reported users†saw improvement 2-3 days after treatment,1-3‡and results may last up to 5 months.2-4§Results of repeat treatments may be comparable to your first use.
Follow-up
To maintain your improvements, you should wait to discuss a treatment schedule with your doctor. As with any botulinum toxin product, you need to wait at least 90 days between treatments.Dysportis not habit-forming, and if you decide not to continue, you will gradually return to the look you had before starting treatment.
As with any injections, bruising can occur. You can minimize your risk by avoiding blood thinners (that aren’t medically necessary) for a week before your procedure. This includes alcohol, fish oil and vitamin E supplements, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like aspirin and Advil. If you do develop a headache post-shot, ibuprofen or acetaminophen is generally safe to take.
Dysport is a prescription injection administered by a licensed healthcare professional to treat moderate to severe frown lines (those wrinkles between the eyebrows).
Medically, it’s a botulinum neurotoxin (abobotulinumtoxinA), an acetylcholine release inhibitor and a neuromuscular blocking agent. It temporarily prevents specific muscle movements that cause frown lines.
Administered by a licensed healthcare professional, Dysport is supplied as a single-use, sterile 300-unit vial. The dose of Dysport for the treatment of glabellar lines (frown lines between your eyebrows) is a total of 50 units injected equally among the specific muscles. The dose of Dysport is not the same as the dose of any other botulinum toxin product and cannot be compared to the dosage of any other botulinum toxin product that you may have previously used.
Although office visits can vary, the procedure generally takes 10 to 20 minutes.
Though results vary, over half of users see improvement in moderate to severe frown lines between the brows within 2-3 days.(1-3)
**A secondary endpoint based on Kaplan-Meier estimates of cumulative rate of time to onset of response. The median time to onset of response was 3 days in GL-1 (Dysport 55/105 [52%], Placebo 3/53 [6%] and GL-2 (Dysport 36/71 [51%], Placebo 9/71 [13%]), and 2 days in GL-3 (Dysport 110/200 [55%], Placebo 4/100 [4%]).
One treatment of Dysport provides results that may last for up to 5 months.(2-4†)
†GL-1 and GL-3 evaluated subjects for at least 150 days following treatment. Based on a ≥1-Grade GLSS improvement from baseline utilizing data from two double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled pivotal studies (GL-1, GL-3) in a post-hoc analysis.
The cost of Dysport is determined by your healthcare professional and will vary based on the amount of product used and frequency of injections. Dysport is priced similarly to other botulinum toxin products that are commercially available.
Xeomin (aka incobotulinumtoxinA) is an injectable neurotoxin that temporarily relaxes muscles to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles created by dynamic facial movements, such as smiling, frowning, or raising your eyebrows.
It’s approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), but it’s commonly used off label, to treat everything from gummy smiles to boxy jawlines.
Xeomin injections require no downtime. You can get the treatment done during your lunch hour and go straight back to work.
Along with smoothing existing lines, it can help prevent new wrinkles from forming. It’s common for young women to get neurotoxin injections as a preventive measure, delaying (or keeping) deep lines from forming.
It’s safe for all skin tones and types.
Effects are temporary, so if you’re unhappy with the results, you’re not stuck with them—they’ll gradually disappear over about four months.
FDA APPROVED. CLINICALLY PROVEN.
Frown lines form when facial expressions are made as the muscle under the skin contracts. Over time, as your skin ages, these repeated expressions cause lasting frown lines. Neurotoxins, such as Xeomin®, are prescription medications that block the release of chemicals that cause these muscle contractions so frown lines are softened.
STATE-OF-THE-ART MANUFACTURING PROCESS
Xeomin® is made through a unique precision manufacturing process that isolates the therapeutic component of the molecule and removes the complexing/unnecessary proteins that don’t play an active role in treatment. Xeomin® is a uniquely purified neurotoxin. Studies have not been performed to determine whether the presence or absence of complexing/unnecessary proteins has a long-term effect on safety or efficacy.
Xeomin injections typically take about 10 to 20 minutes (including consultation time). No anesthesia is required, though if you’re particularly sensitive, your provider may apply numbing cream beforehand. If so, expect this to add another 15 to 30 minutes to your treatment time.
Your doctor will use a very small needle to inject Xeomin into the muscles. You’ll probably feel pinching but not pain during the injections. Your doctor may ask you to smile, frown, raise your eyebrows, crinkle your nose, or make other expressions, to help identify the spots that need addressing.
Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription medication injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults. Xeomin® contains botulinum toxin type A, a protein purified from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
When you squint or frown, the muscles between your eyebrows contract, causing the skin to furrow and fold. Over time, as your skin ages and loses some of its elasticity, these repeated contractions can cause persistent frown lines. Botulinum toxin type A – the active ingredient in Xeomin®– acts on nerve endings in muscles to prevent muscle fibers from contracting. By reducing these contractions, Xeomin® can temporarily reduce the lines between your eyebrows.
Xeomin® was proven effective in two randomized, double-blind, multicenter, placebo-controlled clinical trials of 547 healthy, adult patients. The average age of patients in the study was 46 years. Patients received 20 Units of Xeomin® and were classified as responders if they had a 2-grade improvement on a 4-point scale as assessed by the physician and patient. Using these criteria, treatment success was higher with Xeomin® than placebo on Day 30 in both studies (60% and 48% vs. 0% for placebo in both studies). Based on these trials, Xeomin® received FDA approval for use in glabellar lines in 2011.
If you are an adult with moderate to severe glabellar lines, Xeomin® may be right for you. Talk to your doctor to discuss the benefits and risks of treatment. Do not use Xeomin® if you are allergic to botulinum toxin or any of the other ingredients in Xeomin®. You should also not use Xeomin® if you have had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product or have a skin infection at the planned injection site.
Before receiving treatment with Xeomin®, you should tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, including whether you have a disease that affects your muscles and nerves, have allergies to any botulinum toxin product, or have experienced any side effect from any other botulinum toxin in the past. In addition, tell your doctor about your medical history and all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you have received any other botulinum toxin product in the last four months or in the past. Be sure your doctor knows exactly which product(s) you received and when you received them.
You may begin to see visible smoothing as early as 3-4 days after injection. The median first onset of effect was less than a week. The maximum effect occurred at 30 days. The typical duration of effect was up to 3 months in clinical trials but may last significantly longer or shorter in individual patients.
